There’s more to an artist than just the music they release – producing, composing, songwriting, and of course, performing. While the list of performance greats are endless, we’ve compiled some of our favorites below.
Beyonce – When it comes to live performances, no other artist puts in as much into crafting their routine than Beyonce Knowles.
Knowles has won 24 MTV Music Awards, the most ever in history. She also holds the record for most BET and Soul Train awards nominated and won.
Her live show style has been described as “sexy, seductive, and provocative”. We can thank her semi-retired alter ego who she channels for this. Beyonce created the stage character Sasha Fierce to separate her on-stage persona from her real-life personality.
Beyonce was put at number 1 in the New York Post’s Five Best Singer/Dancers list. Music critic for the New York Times, Jody Rosen, called Beyonce “the most important and compelling popular musician of the twenty-first century”.
Ann Wilson – Frontwomen for the band Heart, Ann Wilson is also a solo artist, still out there on the road delivering her dramatic soprano vocal styling to the fans who love her everywhere.
Shania Twain – Canadian singer and songwriter Shania Twain is one of the top-selling country music artists of all time and known as one of the greatest performers – man or woman. Shania hit the nail on the head with her 2019 American Music Award performance where she took fans and viewers through all of her greatest hits in one sitting.
Madonna – Madonna Louise Ciccone, aka the “Queen of Pop”, may have been the biggest artist of the 80s right next to Michael Jackson. Madonna was known to craft excellent pop songs with “artsy” twists that were chart-toppers.
So much more than just a run-of-the-mill pop artist, she revolutionized the way that pop concerts were performed – known for her high-energy and “artsy”, highly-visual approach. But you may not know her as the amazing songwriter that she is. Madonna is recognized for pushing the boundaries of pop music songwriting, a far cry from what most pop artists are capable of today.
Lady Gaga – Picking up the torch from Madonna, Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta is better known as Lady Gaga, or the “Queen of Pop”, according to Rolling Stone. And like the original Queen of Pop, Lady Gaga is known for her live performances, fashion, style, and imagery.
Lady Gaga is considered among the best live female vocalists of our day, if not the best. She’s won 11 Grammy’s, 2 Golden Globe awards, 13 MTV awards, and set multiple Guinness Records.
Taylor Swift – Taylor Swift is not only a powerhouse singer and performer, but she may have been destined to be one of the best songwriters of our time. Named after James Taylor, Swift is unique in terms of a pop songwriter, penning songs based on her life experiences while she touches on personal topics.
Taylor holds many awards for her achievements in music and has set two records for the most American Music Awards (29) and most Billboard Awards (23) won by an artist, a record she shares with Beyonce. Billboard ranked her as the 8th Greatest of All Time Artists.
Cher – Autotune may be mostly associated with hip hop artists, so it may be surprising to hear that Cher was the pioneer of this sound, making history on her 1998 record “Believe”. While the above two artists have been coined the “Queen of Pop”, Cherilyn Sarkisian, better known as Cher, is described as the “Goddess of Pop”.
Cher has done it all from singing, performing, acting, and Broadway. She has sold over 100 million records worldwide and is one of the best selling artists of all time.
